Since our inception in 1988, making travel fun and inclusive has been our core mission. It’s often said that not all heroes wear capes, and we couldn’t agree more. Our true heroes are our support workers, the backbone of ClubMates Travel. We are fortunate to have a dedicated team of support workers who help us fulfill our commitment to fun and inclusive experiences. One such hero is Carol Clarke, who has been with us since 2006. In this blog, we’ll dive into her journey with ClubMates Travel.
Meet Carol Clarke, a steadfast member of our support crew for 18 years. Amid a bustling schedule, we had the opportunity to chat with her about her years of service. Carol has embarked on numerous tours with many passengers, each bringing a unique set of experiences. Reflecting on a memorable respite, she recalls, “I remember being on a tour of Memphis and Graceland where all our passengers were huge fans of Elvis. Visiting Sun Studios, where Elvis first recorded his music, was magical. Seeing our passengers’ eyes light up, knowing Elvis had spent so much time there, was unforgettable.” Our 2019 trip to Memphis, a city heralded as the “Home of the Blues & Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” was indeed special.
The Transformative Role of Our Support Crew
Support workers are crucial in aiding individuals with disabilities, with a focus on boosting their independence and enhancing their overall quality of life. “Establishing a relationship with each individual is key, even if we only have a week or ten days,” Carol explains. “As part of the support crew on tours, earning the trust of our passengers is essential. We strive to make them feel safe and provide reassurance if they’re nervous about traveling or being away from familiar surroundings.”
Challenges in the Field
Like any role, being a support worker comes with its challenges. “Anticipating and adapting to various needs is crucial for ensuring a smooth experience for our passengers,” says Carol. She shares examples such as rearranging furniture in accommodations to fit disability equipment like hoists and wheelchairs.
The Language of Care and Support
While support workers may come and go, some, like Carol, stay for years. When asked about what it takes, she notes, “You need to be supportive, respectful, caring, kind, and understanding. A flexible attitude and the ability to adapt to different situations are also essential. And while we love travel, we’re here to ensure our passengers enjoy their experience—not as a holiday for us, but a joyous occasion for them.”
Life Beyond ClubMates Travel
Off duty, Carol enjoys unwinding by going to the movies and catching up with friends. She also has a penchant for shopping—a universal joy!
