For many adults with intellectual disabilities, the idea of going away can feel big and exciting, but also a little overwhelming. New people, new places, and new routines can make even the most wonderful opportunity feel uncertain at first. That’s why preparing well makes such a difference. With the right disability travel services and a trusted NDIS travel provider guiding the way, that first supported adventure becomes not just possible, but genuinely life changing.

At ClubMates Travel, we see this transformation every day. Someone who once worried about leaving home starts making friends, joining group activities for people with disabilities, and discovering confidence they didn’t know they had. A supported tour isn’t just a break from routine. It’s a stepping stone to independence, pride, and connection.

This guide walks you through how to prepare an adult with intellectual disability for their first supported tour and how to make the transition from home to holiday as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

The Importance of the Right First Trip

That first supported tour often sets the tone for every trip that follows. When someone feels safe, supported, and set up for success, a whole world of possibility opens.

We’ve supported adults who went from being nervous to step onto the bus to later booking interstate festivals, cruises, and international trips. And again and again, carers tell us the same thing: “I can’t believe how much more confident they are after getting home.”

Start With Conversations: Not Logistics

Before thinking about suitcases or packing lists, start with simple conversations.

In the lead up to the trip, ask things like:

  • What are you excited about?
  • What are you unsure about?
  • What would help you feel comfortable?
  • Are you hoping to make new friends?

Build Familiarity Before the Big Day

You can help by:

  • Looking at photos and videos together of the destination to build excitement and familiarity
  • Breaking the itinerary into simple steps
  • Talking about what daily routines might look like
  • Discussing the differences between home and the destination
  • Talking about different personalities and how to manage them when in a group

What Families and Carers Can Expect

On a supported tour with ClubMates, passengers can expect a trained support crew that will provide a structured itinerary where their daily livingroutines will be built around key grouo inclusion activities for the day.

This will be a great confidence building opportunity to allow them to experience new activities an destinations, but within a safe, supported environment with a team who knows how to introduce and manage unpredictability.

They will practice skills that build independence like:

  • Packing and unpacking
  • Making purchases where we help with or teach how to manage spending money
  • Preparing and carrying a day bag
  • Practising introductions and social interactions with new people
  • Routine changes

Preparing for Day One

On the day and as you are heading for the meeting point, you can prepare for a smooth handover by giving the passenger some gentle reminders:

  • The crew will guide you
  • You’ll meet the group and make new friends
  • It’s ok to ask for space
  • Other passengers feel nervous too

We will, encourage them tosay hello, invite them to group meals, cheer them on in group activities, invite them to share their opinion, take photos and even encourage singing and dancing if they are so inclined!

Homesickness Happens

Homesickness is completely normal, especially when someone is heading out on their first group tour. There are a lot of emotions on the first day. Our crew understands this and gently supports passengers by acknowledging their feelings, keeping routines steady, and offering familiar, caring faces they can rely on and assuring them they are safe and that the emotions will pass with a bit of time. We take things one step at a time, focusing on one enjoyable activity so the day never feels overwhelming. With reassurance and the right guidance, most people settle in quickly and begin to enjoy the experience in their own way.

What You Might See When They Return Home

At ClubMates, we see the impact of supported travel every single day, and the growth our passengers come home with is remarkable. People who once hesitated to try new things often return with real initiative, taking more ownership of their choices and routines. We watch friendships form in places where confidence once held people back, and we see resilience strengthen as passengers navigate new environments with the right support. Many come home more independent than when they left, proud of what they achieved away from their usual surroundings. Most of all, they return with a deeper sense of community involvement, knowing they can step into the world, take part, and genuinely belong.

China is one of those countries that keeps surprising people—especially when you see the landscapes that don’t even look real. Towering rainbow mountains, glass walkways over steep cliffs, mist-covered peaks that inspired movies like Avatar—China’s natural wonders feel like stepping into another world.

And guess what? With the right support and planning, these mind-blowing places can be explored by people of all abilities. At ClubMates Travel, we believe that accessible travel should be more than just getting from A to B—it should be about awe, wonder, and saying “I can’t believe I’m actually here.”

Here are a few incredible spots in China that look out of this world—and why they might just end up on your travel wishlist.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park – The Real-Life Pandora

Ever seen floating mountains? Well, you’re about to. Zhangjiajie is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the inspiration behind the flying mountains in Avatar. Giant stone pillars rise up through misty clouds—it’s so surreal it feels like CGI.

There are cable cars and glass elevators that take you up into the peaks, and accessible walkways in many areas, making this a great option for travel for people with disabilities when paired with the right support crew.

The Rainbow Mountains – Zhangye Danxia Geopark

Imagine layers of red, orange, gold, and green rock stretched across rolling hills. These colourful formations look like someone took a paintbrush to the land. They’re even more breathtaking in person.

The Rainbow Mountains are best explored in daylight hours when the colours shine brightest. Some viewing platforms and paths are paved and can be navigated with mobility assistance. Like all our accessible holidays, having specialist travel support makes a huge difference in comfort and safety.

Yuanyang Rice Terraces – A Living Mirror

At sunrise or sunset, the rice terraces of Yuanyang reflect the sky like an enormous mirror. It’s peaceful, dreamlike, and incredibly calming—perfect for travellers who want to slow down, connect with nature, and just take it all in.

This spot is especially powerful for people who are working toward NDIS goals like mindfulness, emotional regulation, or confidence in new environments. With supported travel, it’s more than sightseeing—it becomes a sensory and emotional experience.

The Glass Bridge – Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon

If you’re feeling brave, there’s a 430-metre-long glass bridge suspended over the canyon. Yes—it’s see-through. But it’s also safe, sturdy, and absolutely unforgettable. For those not afraid of heights, this is an epic moment that will stick with you for life.

We understand that thrill-seeking looks different for everyone. At ClubMates, our support crew are trained to encourage, not push—so passengers can take part in activities at their own comfort level.

Jiuzhaigou Valley – China’s Fairytale Water World

Think turquoise lakes, sparkling waterfalls, and snow-capped peaks. Jiuzhaigou is a dreamscape—peaceful, scenic, and full of charm. It’s also one of the more accessible nature parks in China, with eco buses and walkways that help make the journey smoother.

This kind of environment is great for building confidence, promoting social participation, and feeling part of something beautiful.

Why China? Why ClubMates?

Travelling to a country as big and bold as China might feel impossible—but that’s where we come in. As one of Australia’s most experienced NDIS holiday providers, we specialise in international supported travel that opens up the world for people with disabilities. We design every itinerary to work toward common NDIS goals—things like independence, community access, resilience, and joy.

Our team handles everything: accessible hotels, ground transport, daily activities, and of course, personal support workers who are trained specifically for disability travel.

If you’ve ever dreamt of seeing the Great Wall, watching lanterns float across the sky, or standing in a place that feels like another planet—then maybe it’s time to get curious.

ClubMates makes accessible travel across the globe achievable, enjoyable, and unforgettable.

Talk to our team about our upcoming tours to China or ask about designing your own supported adventure. We’ll help you figure out how your supports work with your NDIS funding and what out-of-pocket costs you can expect.

Because no one should miss out on the wonders of the world—especially you.
